What is Zakat?
Zakat is an Islamic finance term referring to the obligation that an individual has to donate a certain proportion of wealth each year to charitable causes. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
What is Fitra (Zakat al-Fitr)?
Zakat al-Fitr is a charity given to the poor at the end of the fasting in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. It is obligatory upon every Muslim, male or female, young or old.
How is Zakat calculated?
Zakat is typically calculated as 2.5% of a Muslim's total savings and wealth above a minimum amount known as Nisab. This includes cash, gold, silver, investments, and business inventory, minus any debts.
What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before they become liable to pay Zakat. It is traditionally equivalent to the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver.
Who must pay Fitra?
Fitra is obligatory on every Muslim who has enough food for themselves and their family for the day and night of Eid. The head of the household usually pays on behalf of all dependents.
When should Fitra be paid?
Fitra must be paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It is highly recommended to pay it a few days before Eid so that the poor can also prepare for the celebration.
